London is home to some of the UK’s most beautiful period properties, from Victorian townhouses and elegant terraces to contemporary family homes. Designing a kitchen for these spaces often calls for a careful balance: creating something that feels unmistakably modern in how it functions, while remaining sympathetic to the character and architecture of the home.

At Thomas James Bespoke, we design and handcraft luxury bespoke kitchens in London and across the UK, creating kitchens that are tailored around the way our clients live. From clever storage and considered cabinetry to distinctive materials and beautifully crafted details, every element is designed with both aesthetics and everyday life in mind.

Here are four of our favourite London kitchen projects, each offering inspiration for creating a truly bespoke space.

1. Our Barnet Project: Warm Tones and Natural Materials

Collection: Sienna

Our Barnet kitchen is a masterclass in balance and detail, combining warm tones, natural materials and contemporary bespoke cabinetry to create a space that feels both refined and welcoming.

At the heart of the room is a striking waterfall island, crafted from richly veined porcelain and paired with a dramatic book-matched splashback. The movement within the stone creates a natural focal point, while the waterfall edge gives the island a contemporary, architectural feel.

Stained oak cabinetry brings warmth and depth to the scheme, contrasting beautifully with the softer neutral cabinetry surrounding the space. Extending the cabinetry to the ceiling not only makes the most of the available storage, but also draws the eye upwards, creating a greater sense of height.

One of our favourite details is the back-lit bar, which introduces a warm, fiery amber glow to the room. Rather than dominating the design, it creates an atmospheric focal point that comes into its own when entertaining in the evening.

The result is a luxury bespoke kitchen in London that demonstrates how contrasting materials, considered lighting and carefully designed cabinetry can work together to create a space that feels sophisticated without losing its sense of warmth.

Kitchen inspiration to take from Barnet

  • Combine natural wood with softer painted cabinetry for contrast.
  • Use book-matched stone or porcelain to create a statement.
  • Extend cabinetry to the ceiling to maximise storage and height.
  • Consider integrated lighting to create atmosphere after dark.
  • Introduce a dedicated bar or drinks area for entertaining.

2. Manon’s Dream Kitchen: French Style Meets British Craftsmanship

Bringing the dream kitchen of chef and cookbook author Manon Lagreve to life was a particularly special project for us. You may recognise Manon from The Great British Bake Off, and her kitchen needed to reflect both her love of cooking and her distinctive personal style.

Located within a beautiful Victorian townhouse in London, the brief was to combine French-inspired interiors with British craftsmanship, creating a kitchen that felt personal to Manon while sitting naturally within the character of her home.

As a chef, content creator and busy mum, the kitchen needed to work hard in every sense. It had to function as an everyday family kitchen, provide space for entertaining and offer a beautifully considered backdrop for filming and photography.

The home’s quirky layout presented an opportunity to make the design truly bespoke. Every inch was carefully considered, with integrated spice racks, pantry cupboards and deep double drawers helping to maximise storage without compromising the aesthetics of the room.

Full-height cabinetry and shelving are accessed using bespoke library ladders, adding an unexpected architectural detail while making practical use of the available vertical space.

The French bistro influence can be seen in the finer details, from mesh-front cabinetry to the bespoke chalkboard feature. Patinated brass hardware adds warmth throughout the space, demonstrating how seemingly small details can have a significant impact on the finished design.

The result is a kitchen that feels chic, warm and effortlessly inviting. It brings together timeless French style and handcrafted British cabinetry, while remaining thoroughly practical for modern family life.

Kitchen inspiration to take from Manon’s kitchen

  • Let the architecture of your home influence the design rather than working against it.
  • Make use of vertical space with full-height cabinetry.
  • Consider bespoke storage for the ingredients and equipment you use most.
  • Use hardware and smaller details to introduce character.
  • Combine practical features with decorative elements to create a kitchen that feels personal.

3. Grace Beverley’s Kitchen: Traditional Character for Modern Family Life

Collection: Heritage

Our Heritage kitchen for entrepreneur, podcaster and content creator Grace Beverley was designed for a new chapter in family life.

The brief was to create a kitchen rich in character and timeless appeal, inspired by the charm of traditional English homes. Grace wanted the room to feel beautifully antique and layered with personality, while still providing the functionality needed for modern family life.

A key part of the design was creating a space that could adapt to different moments throughout the day — from quiet morning coffees to entertaining friends and gathering around the table with family.

One of the most bespoke features is the hidden breakfast station. Carefully designed to house a coffee machine alongside a custom tea drawer, serving trays and chopping boards, it allows everything needed for the morning routine to be close at hand while remaining beautifully concealed when not in use.

Rich, deep wood-stained cabinetry establishes a feeling of warmth throughout the kitchen, while patinated brass hardware adds depth and character. A thoughtfully integrated pot filler provides another example of how practical features can become an important part of the overall design.

Quartzite worktops complete the scheme, bringing natural texture and variation to the antique-inspired palette.

The finished kitchen combines the charm of a traditional English interior with the demands of modern family living — an approach that works particularly well within London’s period properties.

Kitchen inspiration to take from Grace Beverley’s kitchen

  • Use stained timber to create warmth and depth.
  • Conceal everyday appliances behind bespoke cabinetry.
  • Consider a dedicated breakfast station for coffee and tea-making.
  • Choose natural stone for texture and individuality.
  • Mix traditional details with modern functionality for a timeless result.

4. Fulham: A Deep Green Bespoke Kitchen in a Victorian Townhouse

Collection: Sienna

Our Fulham project demonstrates how a contemporary kitchen can sit beautifully within a period London home.

Designed for a young family living in a beautiful Victorian townhouse, the brief was to maximise the use of space while remaining sympathetic to the character of the property.

The clients chose our Sienna cabinetry, handpainted in a colour matched to Paint & Paper Library’s Hornblende — a deep, rich green that gives the kitchen a sophisticated and atmospheric feel.

Green kitchen cabinetry works particularly well in period properties, bringing depth and character while complementing traditional architectural details.

As with many London homes, making the most of the available space was an important part of the design. Bespoke storage solutions ensure the kitchen works efficiently for family life, while full-height elements make use of otherwise overlooked space.

The details are what really bring the design together. Bespoke library ladders provide practical access to higher cabinetry while becoming a distinctive feature in their own right. A patinated brass pot filler introduces warmth against the deep green cabinetry, combining decorative appeal with everyday functionality.

The finished kitchen feels considered and characterful, proving that a bespoke kitchen in a London townhouse can enhance the original architecture while offering everything a modern family needs.

Kitchen inspiration to take from Fulham

  • Deep green cabinetry can create a sophisticated and timeless scheme.
  • Choose colours that complement the architectural character of a period property.
  • Incorporate practical features that also become design details.
  • Use bespoke cabinetry to make awkward or compact spaces work harder.
  • Don’t overlook hardware — brass finishes can add warmth and personality.

Designing a Bespoke Kitchen for Your London Home

One of the greatest advantages of a truly bespoke kitchen is the freedom to design around your home rather than forcing your home to fit a standard kitchen.

This is particularly important in London, where every property is different. Victorian townhouses, Georgian homes and contemporary developments all present their own architectural details, proportions and challenges.

Whether you’re looking to create a traditional English kitchen, a contemporary space with clean lines or something that sits somewhere in between, the starting point should always be the way you live.

Consider how you use your kitchen throughout the day. Where do you need storage? Do you regularly entertain? Would a hidden breakfast station make mornings easier? Could full-height cabinetry make better use of the room? Are there architectural features worth highlighting rather than concealing?

These are the details that transform a beautiful kitchen into one that genuinely works for you.

At Thomas James Bespoke, our kitchens are designed around you, handcrafted in England and made entirely bespoke. From the first design conversation through to installation, we consider every element of the space — from the overall layout and cabinetry style to the smallest functional detail.
